Misconceptions about Africa

by Maya Fotuhi | TEDxUPV

2024

Common misconceptions of Africa include the ideas that everyone lives in poverty and there are no growing industries or opportunities. While it’s true that in Sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that more than 218 million people live in extreme poverty, many people simply do not see past the statistics to gain a deeper understanding about the root of the problems. Furthermore, many people fail to understand that not every African country is poor, and that Africa is, in fact, quite rich in many growing areas. Maya Fotuhi is a budding talent who, at just a young age, has already authored a book that seeks to shatter the misconceptions and stereotypes that revolve Africa and its people, enlightening its readers on a side that people often overlook. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
